In egotism, the world is dead; it dies and dies, again and again. As long as there is breath in the body, he does not remember God, Waheguru Ji; what will he do when he goes beyond? One who remembers the Lord, Waheguru Ji is spiritually wise; the ignorant act blindly. O Nanak, whatever one does in this world determines what he shall receive in the world beyond. || 1 || THIRD MEHL: It is the pre-ordained Command of the Lord, Waheguru Ji and Master, that one cannot be conscious of Him without the My True Guru Ji. Meeting the My True Guru Ji, one realizes that the Lord, Waheguru Ji is permeating and pervading deep within; he remains forever absorbed in the Lord, Waheguru Ji’s Love. With each and every breath, he constantly remembers the Lord, Waheguru Ji in meditation; not a single breath passes in vain. The fear of birth and death departs, and one obtains the honored state of eternal life. O Nanak, this rank is bestowed upon those whom He showers with His Mercy. || 2 || PAUREE: He Himself is all-wise and all-knowing; He Himself is supreme. He Himself reveals His form, and He Himself enjoins us to His meditation. He Himself poses as a silent sage, and He Himself speaks spiritual wisdom. He does not seem bitter to anyone; He is pleasing to all. His Praises cannot be described; I am forever and ever a sacrifice to Him. || 19 ||

ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਮੁਆ ਮਰਦੋ ਮਰਦਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
हउमै विचि जगतु मुआ मरदो मरदा जाइ ॥
Ha▫umai vicẖ jagaṯ mu▫ā marḏo marḏā jā▫e.
In egotism, the world is dead; it dies and dies, again and again.
ਜਿਚਰੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਕਿ ਕਰੇਗੁ ਅਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
जिचरु विचि दमु है तिचरु न चेतई कि करेगु अगै जाइ ॥
Jicẖar vicẖ ḏamm hai ṯicẖar na cẖeṯ▫ī kė kareg agai jā▫e.
As long as there is breath in the body, he does not remember the Lord, Waheguru Ji; what will he do in the world hereafter?
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਚੇਤੰਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
गिआनी होइ सु चेतंनु होइ अगिआनी अंधु कमाइ ॥
Gi▫ānī ho▫e so cẖeṯann ho▫e agi▫ānī anḏẖ kamā▫e.
One who remembers the Lord, Waheguru Ji is a spiritual teacher; the ignorant one acts blindly.
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਥੈ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਅਗੈ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
नानक एथै कमावै सो मिलै अगै पाए जाइ ॥१॥
Nānak ethai kamāvai so milai agai pā▫e jā▫e. ||1||
O Nanak, whatever one does in this world, determines what he shall receive in the world hereafter. ||1||

ਧੁਰਿ ਖਸਮੈ ਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਇਆ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚੇਤਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
धुरि खसमै का हुकमु पइआ विणु सतिगुर चेतिआ न जाइ ॥
Ḏẖur kẖasmai kā hukam pa▫i▫ā viṇ saṯgur cẖeṯi▫ā na jā▫e.
From the very beginning, it has been the Will of the Lord, Waheguru Ji Master, that He cannot be remembered without the My True Guru Ji.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
सतिगुरि मिलिऐ अंतरि रवि रहिआ सदा रहिआ लिव लाइ ॥
Saṯgur mili▫ai anṯar rav rahi▫ā saḏā rahi▫ā liv lā▫e.
Meeting the My True Guru Ji, he realizes that the Lord, Waheguru Ji is permeating and pervading deep within him; he remains forever absorbed in the Lord, Waheguru Ji's Love.
ਦਮਿ ਦਮਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਮਾਲਦਾ ਦੰਮੁ ਨ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
दमि दमि सदा समालदा दमु न बिरथा जाइ ॥
Ḏam ḏam saḏā samālḏā ḏamm na birthā jā▫e.
With each and every breath, he constantly remembers the Lord, Waheguru Ji in meditation; not a single breath passes in vain.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਗਇਆ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
जनम मरन का भउ गइआ जीवन पदवी पाइ ॥
Janam maran kā bẖa▫o ga▫i▫ā jīvan paḏvī pā▫e.
His fears of birth and death depart, and he obtains the honored state of eternal life.
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਮਰਤਬਾ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
नानक इहु मरतबा तिस नो देइ जिस नो किरपा करे रजाइ ॥२॥
Nānak ih marṯabā ṯis no ḏe▫e jis no kirpā kare rajā▫e. ||2||
O Nanak, He bestows this rank upon that mortal, upon whom He showers His Mercy. ||2||

He Himself is all-wise and all-knowing; He Himself is supreme.
ਆਪੇ ਰੂਪ ਦਿਖਾਲਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ਧਿਆਨਾਂ ॥
आपे रूप दिखालदा आपे लाइ धिआनां ॥
Āpe rūp ḏikẖālḏā āpe lā▫e ḏẖi▫ānāʼn.
He Himself reveals His form, and He Himself enjoins us to His meditation.
ਆਪੇ ਮੋਨੀ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਕਥੈ ਗਿਆਨਾਂ ॥
आपे मोनी वरतदा आपे कथै गिआनां ॥
Āpe monī varaṯḏā āpe kathai gi▫ānāʼn.
He Himself poses as a silent sage, and He Himself speaks spiritual wisdom.
ਕਉੜਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਸਭਨਾ ਹੀ ਭਾਨਾ ॥
कउड़ा किसै न लगई सभना ही भाना ॥
Ka▫uṛā kisai na lag▫ī sabẖnā hī bẖānā.
He does not seem bitter to anyone; He is pleasing to all.
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਬਰਨਿ ਨ ਸਕੀਐ ਸਦ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਨਾ ॥੧੯॥
उसतति बरनि न सकीऐ सद सद कुरबाना ॥१९॥
Usṯaṯ baran na sakī▫ai saḏ saḏ kurbānā. ||19||
His Praises cannot be described; forever and ever, I am a sacrifice to Him. ||19||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਮੁਆ ਮਰਦੋ ਮਰਦਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਕਿ ਕਰੇਗੁ ਅਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਚੇਤੰਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਥੈ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਅਗੈ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
ਸਲੋਕ ਤੀਜੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ। ਹੰਕਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਦੇਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਆਸ ਹੈ, ਉਦੋਂ ਤਾਈਂ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ। ਜਦ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਊਗਾ, ਉਹ ਕੀ ਕਰੂਗਾ? ਜੋ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਖ਼ਬਰਦਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬੇਸਮਝ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇਵਾਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁੱਛ ਆਦਮੀ ਏਥੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਕੁੱਛ ਉਹ ਅੱਗੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਤੇ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰੇਗੁ = ਕਰੇਗਾ। ਗਿਆਨੀ = ਸਮਝਦਾਰ। ਅਗਿਆਨੀ = ਮੂਰਖ। ਅੰਧੁ = ਅੰਨਿ੍ਹਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ।੧।
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਮੁਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਨਿੱਤ (ਹਿਠਾਂ ਹਿਠਾਂ) ਪਿਆ ਗਰਕਦਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ; ਜਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਦਮ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ; (ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਜੀਵ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਕਿ) ਅਗਾਂਹ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕੀਹ ਹਾਲ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੋ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਉਹੋ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।੧।

ਤੀਜੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ। ਐਨ ਆਰੰਭ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਸਾਈਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਰ ਸੁਆਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਹ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣ ਤੇ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਅਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਮਰਤਬਾ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਇਹ ਰੁਤਬਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੰਮੁ = ਸੁਆਸ। ਬਿਰਥਾ = ਖ਼ਾਲੀ। ਪਦਵੀ = ਦਰਜਾ, ਮਰਤਬਾ।੨।
ਧੁਰੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਚਲਿਆ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ; ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ; ਸੁਆਸ ਸੁਆਸ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇੱਕ ਭੀ ਸੁਆਸ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ; (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਅਸਲ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਮਰਤਬਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਹ ਦਰਜਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੀਵਨ-ਪਦਵੀ) ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।੨।

ਪਉੜੀ। ਸਾਹਿਬ ਖੁਦ ਸਰਬ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਕੁੱਛ ਜਾਨਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਮੁੱਖੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਵਿਖਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਚੁੱਪ ਚੁਪੀਤਾ ਹੋ ਵਿਚਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਕੌੜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਭਾਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ, ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਉਤੋਂ ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਚਤੁਰ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਗੂ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਰੂਪ ਵਿਖਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੋਨਧਾਰੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਕੌੜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ (ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ) ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ। ਐਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ।੧੯।
